The research staff at Radio Free Europe is as well equipped as any center in the West to understand and interpret the dramatic happenings in Poland since 1980. Three of its members have written one of the best studies yet to appear on that country's 15 months of semi-freedom and the aftermath. Not a definitive history, it picks from the complex totality of developments a few vital ones, such as the effects of the crisis on the Communist Party, the reactions and decisions of the U.S.S.R., and the impact on communist parties elsewhere in Europe.
