John Devlin, with years of experience as a CIA analyst, has a deep knowledge of Syria, but due to the limitations of space imposed by himself or by the editors, he imparts too little of it in these pages. The book is a good introduction to the country, especially in its treatment of the "political dynamics," but it is disappointingly sketchy in dealing with external questions such as the complex and crucial relationship with the U.S.S.R.
