Vietnam: A History

By Stanley Karnow
Viking, 1983
752 pp. $22.50

This thick companion to the excellent public television series on the war in Vietnam is the best book to recommend for someone who wants to read one book on the subject, but it also will inform the specialist. Mr. Karnow draws on a belief in the importance of history, his journalistic experience in Southeast Asia dating back to 1959, good interviewing, and assiduous research in published and unpublished material. The North Vietnamese material is fresh and particularly interesting.
