Next To God. . .Poland

By Bogdan Szajkowski

The mixed record of conflict and coexistence between the Communist regime and the Catholic Church in Poland has shown how the latter, as guardian of the enduring interests of the Polish nation, has to avoid the extremes both of collaboration and of all-out opposition. This is a straightforward account, among the best available in English, done with sound knowledge and real understanding, although no straightforward account can do full justice to the maze of interacting tactics of the Vatican, the Episcopate and the Communist government.
