One Earth, Four or Five Worlds
One Earth, Four or Five Worlds
By Octavio Paz
Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1985, 224 pp

A small volume, of great worth: essays devoted to the international condition and to various national scenes, including the United States (the "Imperial Democracy"), Russia ("cynicism, venality, and hypocrisy"), Iran, Mexico and others, all written with deep learning, somber moral grandeur, and a multitude of subtle and challenging insights. Believing that the time is ripe, Paz advocates for Latin America a renaissance, a continental democratic alliance or policy that would discover within Latin American traditions the seeds and roots of a genuine democracy.
