Alien Powers: The Pure Theory of Ideology

By Kenneth Minogue

St. Martin's, 1985, 255 pp.

A searching discussion of the relation of ideology to politics, much of the author's critique is directed at Marx and Marxism, with occasional sideswipes at the feminists, but applies as well to rightist totalitarians or Islamic fundamentalists, or any system with similar claims to a monopoly of truth. His case, brilliantly and convincingly argued, does not deal directly with international relations, but the references to the record of victorious Marxism in practice reinforce the main argument tenfold.
