Military Rule in Chile: Dictatorship and Oppositions

Edited by J. Samuel Valenzuela and Arturo Valenzuela

Johns Hopkins University Press, 1986, 331 pp.

Nine detailed and scholarly essays by Chilean and American academics examine all aspects of the Pinochet regime. The papers originated in a Woodrow Wilson Center workshop in 1980 and for the most part bring their stories up to the end of 1982, antedating the 1983 political crisis. The general prognosis is negative: "Only an escalation of violence seems in store."
