Modernizing China: Post-Mao Reform and Development

Edited by A. Doak Barnett and Ralph N. Clough

Westview Press, 1986, 136 pp.

This collection of articles on China's modernization strategy is based on a series of lectures delivered at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced Studies during the 1984-85 academic year by a group of prominent American China specialists. It is short and extremely readable. The overall picture that emerges, say the editors, is one of a very far-reaching, even historic transformation that may now be "altering the nature of the political and economic system [in China] and of society at large."
