The Primacy of Freedom in Development
The Primacy of Freedom in Development
By Ambassador Soedjatmoko
University Press of America, 1985, 91 pp

Former Indonesian ambassador to the United States (1968-71), now rector of the United Nations University in Tokyo, Ambassador Soedjatmoko is a voice to be respected when he speaks of the problems of our time and especially those of the Third World. The essays in this slender volume, taken from various earlier and not always easily accessible publications, blend very well because they all have the essential theme of freedom and its importance for new developing nations. He sets high standards for human endeavor and governance, standards which contrast not only with what these nations have done but with what it seems possible for them to do.
