Soviet Military Interventions Since 1945
Soviet Military Interventions Since 1945
By Alex P. Schmid, with case studies by Ellen Berends
Transaction Books, 1985, 223 pp

Two Dutch scholars identify and describe 44 interventions, ten of them in separate though quite brief case studies, classifying them as intrabloc (mainly action to establish or restore subservient regimes in Eastern Europe), interbloc (cold war moves in Berlin, Korea, Cuba and elsewhere), and extrabloc (adventures in the Third World). It is hardly a work of great originality, but it is well done and unwavering in the search for truth on both sides of the cold war. The sober conclusion, that no end to Soviet intervention and expansionist policies is in sight, is amply justified by the historical record.
