Stalin and the European Communists
Stalin and the European Communists
By Paolo Spriano
Verso, 1985, 320 pp.

A leading Italian historian, drawing heavily on the Italian material, describes the turns and twists of Stalin's policies vis-à-vis a once strong communist movement in Western Europe. A short, somewhat superficial survey of Stalin's policies and motives, with a grasp of the pathological components and the often self-defeating results. There are many memorable quotes from that period which began and ended with great purges, first in the U.S.S.R. and then, toward the end of Stalin's time, in Eastern Europe.
