Brothers in Arms: A Journey from War to Peace
Brothers in Arms: A Journey from War to Peace
By William Broyles, Jr.
Knopf, 1986, 283 pp

In 1969 the author was a marine lieutenant in heavy combat in Vietnam. After a decade and a half as an accomplished journalist and editor in the United States, he made an extended visit to Vietnam in 1984. This enthralling book interweaves his memories of the war with an account of the Vietnamese, former enemies and "brothers in arms" with whom he talked during his visits to Hanoi, Saigon (hardly anyone calls it Ho Chi Minh City), and scenes of former battles. He received a very human and touching welcome, even while the Vietnamese were making it clear that they could not forget or forgive.
