Honecker's Germany
Honecker's Germany
Edited by David Childs
Allen & Unwin, 1985, 201 pp

Concentrating on developments in the German Democratic Republic since Honecker took over from Ulbricht, and drawing on a stable of experts, David Childs has put together a useful handbook that supplements and brings up to date his book, The GDR: Moscow's German Ally (1983). The contributions vary considerably in length and quality; Stephen Frowen's on the economy is among the better ones, those on the intellectuals and literary works are of special interest, and the editor's own piece on East Germany and the United States is disappointing.
