A comparative examination of Soviet "involvement" and "intervention" in ten Middle East wars, to see whether Moscow's moves fall into any clear or predictable pattern. There are indeed some consistent patterns of conduct. Soviet policy has been conservative, reactive and cautious. But caution is also called for in drawing any firm conclusions about the future.
