The European Defence Initiative: Europe's Bid for Equality
The European Defence Initiative: Europe's Bid for Equality
By Geoffrey Lee Williams and Alan Lee Williams
St. Martin's, 1986, 242 pp

Despite its title, which in recent times has referred to the concept of a European-sponsored equivalent of SDI, this book covers a broad range of contemporary issues relating to Western defense. The British authors, who have written on these topics for some years, argue for the "Europeanization of NATO." They see a basic antithesis between "unreformed Atlanticism" and a "latent Europeanism," but they are also hesitant to cut the umbilical cord with the United States.
