The Cautious Diplomat: Charles E. Bohlen and the Soviet Union, 1929-1969
By T. Michael Ruddy
Kent State University Press, 1986, 219 pp.

A solid, careful biography befitting the character of its subject. "Chip" Bohlen, distinguished career diplomat, was at the center of Soviet-American relations during the middle decades of this century. Mr. Ruddy stresses Bohlen's pragmatism, moderation and emphasis on Soviet nationalism, using but not overridden by ideology.
