The Common Good

By Marcus G. Raskin
Methuen, 1986
369 pp. $22.50

A serious and heartfelt effort to describe a political philosophy based on a benign version of the Judeo-Christian tradition of "social caring." The book is part theory and part guidebook for those who desire to act on its assumptions. The chapter on "Securing the Nation" includes the draft of an interesting and idealistic treaty for general security and disarmament. "Hard-nosed" realists will pay no attention. Too bad.
