Guerres Secrètes au Liban

By Annie Laurent and Antoine Basbous

Gallimard, 1987, 370 pp.

Two accomplished scholars, French and Lebanese, describe what has happened to that pre-1975 Lebanon which once was the Arab world's freest society and window on the West. They do not mince words in projecting the thesis that Lebanon has been destroyed by those who have used it to play their own games: the PLO, Syria, Israel and Iran-as well as those traditional friends (other Arab states, France, America) whose indifference or fears or stupidities led them to abandon the country to its fate.
