The National Debt

By Lawrence Malkin

Henry Holt, 1987, 309 pp.

Debt is only the beginning for this fluent, wordy, well-informed book by a writer for Time. He covers any number of issues in what is practically a financial history of recent decades, attractively embellished with gossip, unpublished quotes by famous people and a commentary on what Keynes really meant. Issues are clearly explained and blame is freely assigned, especially to the U.S. government and American banks.
