South Africa: A Different Kind of War

By Julie Frederikse
Beacon Press, 1986
192 pp. $12.95

In this visual history of South Africa (from 1976 to the present), the southern Africa correspondent for National Public Radio's "All Things Considered" has created a documentary form that combines the reflective depth of print with the swift movement and pictorial variety of film. Her montage combines interviews with marginal frames featuring newspaper clippings, ads, transcripts of political events and documents, protest songs and student writings-all woven into a moving narrative panorama of South Africa's struggle for and against its future.
