Amir Taheri is a prominent Iranian journalist now in exile. His book offers deep insights into the modes of thought which drive Ayatollah Khomeini and his followers in waging their holy war at home and abroad. It is not a genuine ideology, he says, but a hodgepodge of medieval thought and of methods borrowed from fascism and communism. In any event the impact of the "Party of Allah" throughout the Islamic world has been extraordinary, and Taheri describes it with a wealth of fascinating detail and with definite opinions of his own. "Holy terror" has lived and prospered on violence, but, as he concludes, it has no answers to the real political and economic problems of today.
