Speeches and letters of the leader of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement, which has engaged in armed resistance to the central government in Khartoum both before and since the revolution that deposed General Nimeiri in 1985. Garang makes the point again and again that he is fighting against the traditional power-brokers of northern Sudan, not for the secession of the south but for a united, democratic, federal Sudan. The book is an authoritative statement of the declared aims of a movement about which little is known in the outside world. For a critical analysis, one has to look elsewhere.
