Three Faces of Imperialism: British and American Approaches To Asia and Africa, 1870-1970

This is a systematic comparison of the attitudes toward empire of the elites in Britain before 1939 and in the United States after 1945. The author examines ideas of strategic power, moral obligation and economic advantage. Although the structure is somewhat mechanical, the book is a valuable addition to the considerable literature on the subject.
