A Way Of Hope: An Autobiography
A Way Of Hope: An Autobiography
By Lech Walesa
Henry Holt, 1987, 325 pp.

In telling his own story, Walesa gives ample illustration of how his qualities of leadership came to the fore in the dramatic events of August 1980, and also of how difficult it was for him to continue to provide effective leadership to Solidarity and its many members and supporters in the subsequent period, especially after martial law was imposed in 1981. His book offers striking firsthand testimony on the continuing struggle between regime and society in Poland, as well as on the simple faith and sturdy character of Walesa himself.
