East Asian Conflict Zones
Edited by Lawrence E. Grinter and Young Whan Kihl
St. Martin's, 1987, 254 pp

This is an unusually strong collection of essays on the trouble spots in East Asia, along with some sensible suggestions by the editors on how to reduce tensions in the region. Among the many good essays are: Edward Olsen on competition among the great powers in the Sea of Japan; Peggy Falkenheim on Japanese-Soviet relations and the prospects for a settlement of their territorial problems; and an excellent analysis of the Thai-Vietnamese rivalry in Indochina by William S. Turley.
