World Socialism At The Crossroads: An Insider's View
World Socialism At The Crossroads: An Insider's View
By Silviu Brucan
Praeger, 1987, 208 pp.

The socialist (communist) states, a Romanian witness contends, will never make it in the postindustrial era unless they get rid of their Stalinist heritage and make major changes in economic structure and policy and toward political pluralism, which he sees as quite consistent with the maintenance of socialism and a one-party (though not a totalitarian party) system. A former ambassador, now a professor in Bucharest, Brucan writes as a self-described Marxist, although he is hardly any longer an "insider" in his own country, having incurred the displeasure of the Ceausescu regime for his unorthodox views.
