Managing The Presidency: The Eisenhower Legacy From Kennedy To Reagan

By Phillip G. Henderson

Westview Press, 1988, 205 pp.

The author draws on the extensive archives of the Eisenhower Library in this celebration of the meticulous procedures ordered by President Eisenhower for planning, deciding on and implementing foreign policy. The focus is on the machinery-well oiled and beautifully coordinated-more than on substance. If subsequent administrations had followed the Eisenhower model, the author suggests, much chaos might well have been avoided.
