The Origins Of Palestinian Nationalism
The Origins Of Palestinian Nationalism
By Muhammad Y. Muslih
Columbia University Press, 1988, 277 pp

A first-rate monograph bringing new light, mainly from untapped Arab sources, to an old subject. Covering the period up to 1920, it traces the role of leading Palestinian "notables" and political activists in the interacting and overlapping currents of Ottomanism and Arabism, Arab nationalism in its Syrian and broader pan-Arab phases, and nationalism limited to the historical territory of Palestine. The author does not ignore anti-Zionism as a stimulus but tries to put it into a broad perspective.
