Assuming that Africa in the 1990s will look pretty much the way it does now, the authors survey the broad range of issues of concern to Africans and try, with varying degrees of success, to assess how these are also of concern to the United States. Most interesting are essays staking out new ground: Helen Kitchen's chapter on the workings of U.S. bureaucracies involved in Africa; the chapter by Albert Henn and Charles Meyer on AIDS; and Donald Rothchild's chapter on ethnic conflicts.
