This is yet another of the University of California's splendid series of publications on contemporary Asia in which the authors, eminent scholars from the United States and Southeast Asia, explore the evolving relationship between China and ASEAN. The essays are of uniformly high quality but several stand out. Sukhumbund Paribatra, a Thai scholar, explores the Chinese-Thai security relationship in more detail and with greater insight than is available elsewhere. Edward W. Ross, an analyst in the U.S. Defense Department, writes the single most informative essay extant on the U.S.-Chinese military relationship, updated to December 1987. A concluding essay by Robert Scalapino is a brilliant analysis of the unfolding great-power rivalry in East Asia.
