The life and times of U.S. ambassador to the U.N. Francis Plimpton, as glimpsed through letters by him and by his wife Pauline and son George, plus excerpts from travel diaries, journals, etc. They are spread over 50 years (1920s to 1970s) and the ésprit of the time and place (Paris in the 1930s, Italy in 1946, China in 1920 and again in 1976, among others) is marvelously captured on the wing.
