At The Creation Of A New Germany: From Adenauer To Brandt

By George McGhee

United States Ambassador to the Federal Republic from 1963 to 1968, from the end of the Adenauer era to the eve of the Social-Liberal coalition, McGhee draws heavily on his original reports about political conditions, often reflecting his wide-ranging conversations. A useful, perceptive account which recalls that some of today's problems have deep roots: American protestations concerning the right to reunification, German nervousness about U.S. support, economic disputes and American concerns about Ostpolitik. Also a good record of how the Vietnam War proved a disruptive element in our relations with Europe.
