Domestic Politics And Regional Security: Jordan, Syria And Israel-The End Of An Era
By Valerie Yorke
Gower (for the International Institute for Strategic Studies), 1988, 400 pp.

A review of domestic politics and their interaction with foreign policy in three key countries, setting the stage for extensive inquiry into Jordanian-Syrian relations and the prospects for an Arab-Israeli settlement. The material is fairly well known and can be found in other books; what distinguishes the treatment here is the analysis of political forces in play-the case study of Jordan is particularly good-and of dilemmas facing the leadership in all three countries. On the prospects for each, as on the prospects for Arab-Israeli peace, the author is coolly realistic and, with good reason, coolly pessimistic.
