This is the third in the East-West Center's valuable overview of major political and economic issues in the Asia-Pacific region. The report begins with an incisive discussion by Charles Morrison of the trends toward political liberalization in the region and the improving prospects for maintaining peace. Morrison also has an excellent chapter on the main trends in the regional economy. There is a separate section of eight chapters on China's economic and political reform, all contributed by prominent specialists but written before the recent upheaval in China.
