The Democratic Imperative: Exporting The American Revolution

By Gregory A. Fossedal

Basic Books, 1989, 304 pp.

Were there an award for a book that best expresses the goals of foreign policy as Ronald Reagan wanted them expressed during his presidency (as opposed to how foreign policy was actually carried out), this book would win. The author calls for bold, unapologetic activism in promoting democracy-for example, a more energetic use of radio broadcasting, a willingness to employ economic sanctions, and lowered inhibitions on supporting armed conflict as in Nicaragua.
