This pioneering study does much to explain the "continued stagnation in the power and effectiveness of organized labor" in South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. Similarities and differences are attributed in large part to the structure of the economies as well as political and cultural factors. There are comparisons with several Latin American countries, but nothing is said about Japan. Professor Deyo is not immune to using jargon but he explains his terminology clearly. A long bibliography and good tables add to the value of the book.
