Intifada: The Palestine Uprising-Israel's Third Front

By Ze'ev Schiff and Ehud Ya'ari
Simon & Schuster, 1990
325 pp.

Two Israeli journalists, who have already produced a first-rate book on the war in Lebanon, turn their sights on the Palestinian resistance in the occupied territories, which they see as a mass revolt of a population with nothing to lose. Combining accounts of specific episodes with discussion of the basic issues, they are merciless in exposing the failures of leadership on both sides and the danger that, if matters continue as at present, the middle ground will be lost and only extremists left to contend. At the end they present their own quite detailed proposals for negotiation and settlement, including the point that there is no way to bypass the PLO.
