Excerpts from speeches made at the historic first Congress of People's Deputies in Moscow in May-June 1989, presided over by Gorbachev. The speeches are mainly by representatives from the Baltic republics, Moldavia, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Central Asia, whose candor, criticism and insistence on their peoples' rights were unprecedented.
