The Shattered Bloc: Behind The Upheaval In Eastern Europe

By Elie Abel
Houghton Mifflin, 1990
262 pp. $20.95

With the advantage of a visit to Eastern Europe in 1988 Elie Abel has leapt to the fore in the race to bring out a book including the dramatic events of late 1989. His account shows some signs of haste but is an excellent survey for the general reader and is enriched by Abel's earlier experience as a correspondent in the region and his recent conversations with many East Europeans in all walks of life.
