The Catholic Church In World Politics
The Catholic Church In World Politics
By Eric O. Hanson
Princeton University Press, 1990, 485 pp

This is a remarkably wide-ranging and carefully crafted volume on an often overlooked but important topic. The Vatican is deeply involved in international affairs, as this book makes clear. Hanson gives much attention to the role of the Catholic Church in Western and Eastern Europe, but also details and evaluates its participation in the international system through chapters on arms control as a Catholic political issue and its role in moderating the East-West rivalry of the past. Particular attention is rightly given to the influence the Catholic Church has gained as a result of the active role of Pope John Paul II.
