The thrust of this volume by Japanese and American academics is summed up in the title of Donald Hellmann's concluding essay, "The Imperatives for Reciprocity and Symmetry in U.S.-Japanese Economic and Defense Relations." The book focuses heavily on meeting the Soviet threat, although the authors do admit circumstances are changing. All agree that Japan should assume more of the burden.
