Facing A Cruel Mirror: Israel's Moment Of Truth

By Michael Bar-Zohar
Scribners, 1990
246 pp. $22.95

A memoir of life in Israeli politics since Ben-Gurion's day (the author was a confidant and biographer of Ben-Gurion), combined with a running commentary on what has gone wrong, both internally and internationally, since the heady victory of 1967. The author, a centrist member of the Labor Party, deplores the weaknesses of Israel's constitutional and electoral system and the general shortsightedness and failure of leadership, sprinkling his text with sharp and unflattering portraits of politicians from both Labor and Likud. Lively and also deadly serious, a book well worth reading.
