The book's organization is topical, and the text is interlarded with copious quotations from oral histories furnished by defectors from the U.S.S.R. and its former allies. Their inside revelations are generally not so different from the outside observations of Western Sovietologists, but on many points they are interesting in confirming, supplementing or contradicting those observations. The editors are aware that much of the book may seem out of date in view of recent developments, but they remain convinced that systemic change in the U.S.S.R. can only be "glacial"; in any event, they point, rightly, to the value of this testimony for the record.
