Sendero: Historia de la Guerra Milenaria en el Peru

By Gustavo Gorriti
Apoyo, 1990
399 pp.

An outstanding Peruvian journalist (and former Nieman Fellow at Harvard) has published the first of a projected three-volume study of Peru's Shining Path insurgency, a decade-long guerrilla movement whose actions have cost 20,000 lives so far and which now has effective control over large parts of the nation. Basing his account on scores of interviews and access to secret documents from the insurgents as well as from Peru's armed forces, Gorriti suggests that Shining Path has a millenarian vision, dedication and discipline that could transform Peru's history if the movement is not resisted promptly with greater intelligence and energy. A detailed and illuminating journalistic account.
