Socialism, Perestroika, And The Dilemmas Of Soviet Economic Reform

One of the best of the surveys of the process and prospects of perestroika, its quality virtually guaranteed by the stature of those brought together by the sponsor, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. Contributors include Robert Campbell, Elizabeth Teague, Mark von Hagen, Philip Hanson, Karl-Eugen Wadekin and Hans Heymann. They are less concerned with the specifics of each step taken since 1985 than with the fundamental changes required to make the Soviet economy work, and they measure the ideas and aims of the reforms against the political and social forces in Soviet society, those that push for radical change as well as those that cling to long-established habits, interests and orthodoxies.
