Albanian Stalinism

By Arshi Pipa
East European Monographs, 1990
291 pp. $29.50

A book such as this, made up of pieces written over a 30-year period, creates problems for readers who must keep reminding themselves what decade they are in and also cope with a certain amount of repetition. Until recently, however, Albania has not changed much internally although shifting its foreign policy periodically in search of an ever more distant Big Brother. Thus, most of what is written in or about one decade of the Stalinist system is valid for another. And we have had so few good books on Albania that even a less than perfect work by an author who knows something about the country is greatly to be welcomed.
