Encountering The Dominant Player: U.S. Extended Deterrence Strategy In The Asia-Pacific

By William T. Tow

Columbia University Press, 1991, 540 pp.

This is a detailed, timely and stimulating reexamination of U.S. military and political policy in the Asia-Pacific region. Tow argues that the United States needs to adjust its policy rapidly and substantially to reflect the new post-Cold War world and the region's enormous economic dynamism. He appeals to the United States to explore opportunities to work with key regional actors in order to identify common approaches to maintain regional stability.
