Much of what is said about the value of international coordination of national economic policies rests on loose generalities. These two economists try to show how things work, and what action is likely to produce what result, by testing ideas as to what went on the 1980s. There is more modelling and mathematics than most readers will care for, but the aims, methods and results are set out in usually simple prose.
