Islam and the West

By Bernard Lewis
Oxford University Press, 1993
217 pp. $25.00

With this collection of previously published essays, the author pulls together his thoughts on the relations between Islam and the West. Included here are his response to critics of Orientalism and a number of essays that touch on the current Islamic revival. Lewis stands out among scholars as one who has long maintained that nationalism in the Middle East might one day give way to populist Islam. In these essays he tells why. Whether one agrees with the conclusions or not, the author displays formidable erudition and writes with elegance.
