The National Question in Europe in Historical Context

Edited by Mikulos Teich and Roy Porter
Cambridge University Press, 1993
343 pp. $69.95

A study of the national question in 12 European countries from Britain to Poland, from Finland to Spain by 13 historians. The chapters are, on the whole, informative but rather short on analysis. The exception is the chapter by Winkler on nationalism and the nation-state in Germany, which has a debatable social and economic interpretation.
